Custer Sportsmen's Club
Youth Shooting Classes
Budding young archers interested in developing their abilities
with a bow and arrows can enroll in a youth basic archery training class offered
by the Custer Archers, the archery unit of the Custer Sportsmen's Club.
Starting in early November, the class is open to youngster ages 9-18. Students
and parents need not be affiliated with the Custer Sportsmen's Club to
participate.
Bill Stinson, the club's archery chairman, says the class will focus on proper
shooting techniques and how to become better target shooters, but also will not
lose sight of the "fun" factor associated with target shooting with a
bow and arrows. It will also serve as a springboard for serious would-be archers
who want to enter competitive youth target shooting.
The class will meet from 7-9 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays of the month
on the indoor range at the Custer Sportsmen's Club range complex, 3000 Birch
Bay-Lynden Road, east of Interstate 5.
The only cost to participants for the group class sessions is the $5 club range
fee each use.
Students don't even need to own their own archery tackle to participate. The
Custer club has six loaner bows, including arrows tipped with field points that
students may use each session. Participants who already have long or compound
bows can shoot with them.
Stinson will be assisted by his wife, Pam, as well as Barbara Carlson, Mark
Carlson, Tim Huff and Jason Robinson. All are nationally certified by the United
States Olympic Committee as archery instructors and all are volunteering their
time to teach the course.
This adult group including Stinson, who coaches it, also comprises the Lynden
Ace Hardware Archery Team that will be competing in February at the World
Archery Festival in Las Vegas.
Stinson says any of the young shooters who take the class may sign-up to shoot
mail-in matches sanctioned by the Washington State Archery Association.
For more information about this class or to sign up, call Stinson during the
daytime Wednesdays-Saturdays at 354-2291.
