What is Cowboy Action Shooting all about?
Cowboy Action Shooting is a multi-faceted sport in which contestants compete
with firearms typical of those used in taming the old west. Shooting
competition is staged in unique "old west style." Contestants
shoot in several different 4 gun stages (courses of fire) in which they
fire on reactive steel and cardboard silhouette targets. Scores are based on accuracy and time.
Pistol: You will need 2 single action revolvers, with fixed or adjustable
sights, 32 cal. or larger. You must have
a safe western style holster. No nylon or plastic. We do not fast draw
from the holster.
Rifle: A lever action, iron sights, tubular magazine rifle, 25 cal.
or larger. It should hold a minimum of 8 rounds, 10 rounds preferable, no maximum.
Rifle must be pistol caliber 32-20, 38-40, 44-40, 45 colt, 38 special, 357
Mag. or 44 Mag., (no 30-30, 30-06, 45-70 or the like)
Shotgun: A shotgun in 20 gauge or larger side by side, double
barreled, (no automatic ejector) or a Winchester model 97 or other exposed hammer pump or
lever action shotgun.
Ammo: Bring plenty of ammo. Cowboy Action Shooting is
addictive and we shoot a lot. No jacketed bullets, rifle, pistol, and shotgun loads must be capable
of knocking down steel targets. We determined this to be an absolute minimum muzzle energy of 220 ft lb. (a power factor of 125) with a muzzle
energy of 270 ft lb. recommend to more reliably knock down our steel. Revolver ammunition is limited to muzzle velocity of 1000 ft/sec, rifle
ammunition limited to a velocity of less than 1400 ft/sec, shotgun ammunition limited to no. 6 shot or smaller.
The truly unique aspect of Cowboy Action Shooting is the requirement that all participants dress in period costume and shoot under an alias. Each
participant is required to assume the shooting persona appropriate to the character or profession of the 19th century. Dress accordingly.
Style is
western. The period is 1820 to 1890. Spectators and guests are encouraged to dress in costume to compete. A minimum " costume" includes
cowboy boots, Levis, a western shirt, scarf, and hat. Please, No tennis shoes, Velcro,
nylon, baseball caps or such. Alias' can be from fact or fiction, historical or imaginary.
New to cowboy action shooting: If you're new to Cowboy Action
Shooting, or just interested in watching, give us a call, visit a match or stop by on Sat.
set-up day when we can give you individual attention. Custer Renegades welcomes and accommodates new shooters. However a match
is
not the place to learn to shoot or tryout your equipment. Before participating in a match you must know basic gun safety,
range safety, and
procedures, have basic gun handling skills and have used your own guns and equipment enough so you know they are functioning
safely and you are comfortable
with their use. You must be reasonably accurate, be able to hit a 12-in. target with your revolver at 10 yds and with your rifle at 25 yds. Further
we recommend if you are just getting started don't buy much in the way of
expensive gear until you have been to a match, preferably shot in a few matches.
All you need are the basics; 2 single action six guns with holsters, one shotgun
(model 97) or stage coach gun, and a rifle mid to late 1800's style.
Everyone including spectators, must also have eye and ear protection.
You
must have undertaken a range safety check under the supervision of the Cowboy
Chairman or a delegated Range Officer.
These
checks are usually carried out by appointment on the Saturday preceding
a match.
SASS: Visit the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) web site, www.sassnet.com
for lots of information about Cowboy Action Shooting. SASS has made Cowboy Action Shooting what it is today. We encourage you to join SASS (714)
694-1800 or we have applications available at our shoots.
